Today’s topic is gun violence.

たまにアメリカでまた銃で人が殺されたみたいな報道を見ますよね?
You occasionally see reporting on how, yet again, people were shot to death in America, right?

先日もアメリカで６歳児が学校に銃を持ち込み、教師を撃ったというニュース報道がありました。
Just the other day, there was a news report on how a six year old brought a gun to school and shot a teacher in America.（注1）

アメリカで銃で撃たれてしまう可能性はそんなに高いのでしょうか？
It’s said that America is scary because of guns, but is the chance of getting shot that much higher in America?

その答えは「はい、とても高い」です。
The answer is “yes, very high”.

銃規制が厳しい日本はもちろん、他の先進国と比べても、アメリカでは誰かが一生の間あいだに銃で撃たれてしまう可能性はとんでもなく高いのです。
The probability that someone gets shot at some point in their lifetime is outrageously high compared to other countries, let alone Japan where there are hardly any guns and regulations against guns are strict.

アメリカ疾病予防管理センター（CDC）のデータによると、
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2015年から2019年の間、毎年平均で約12万人もの人々が撃たれています。
In America, between 2015 and 2019, an average of about 120,000 people were shot each year.
その内、約4万人が死亡しています。
Out of this, about 40,000 people have died.

一方、世界保健機関（WHO）によると、日本では同じ時期に一年間の銃による死亡者が３桁に及んだことは一度もありません。
In contrast, according to the World Health Organization, the number of annual gun deaths in Japan during the same period never reached 3 digits.4

日本の場合、過失や自傷行為などによる怪我のデータが見当たらなかったのですが、
I couldn’t find data on accidents and self-inflicted injuries for Japan, but
仮に日本では毎年100人銃で撃たれているとして、
Even assuming 100 people are shot in Japan each year,
撃たれている人口の割合を計算して比較すると、
If you calculate the percentage of the population that is shot each year and make a comparison,
アメリカでは銃で撃たれる可能性は日本のなんと458倍になります。
the probability that you will get shot is 458 times higher in America than in Japan.
